Kate Winslet: dreams can come true

In researching our earlier post on the 2009 Anatomy Awards, we came across the following comment on a web forum about the fabulous Kate Winslet.

Kate Winslet is practically perfect. A brilliant actress who picks great roles. A beautiful woman who believes you should never skip dessert. A class act who still fancies a dirty joke. Funny. Smart. English.

We would disagree with two words only. "Practically", we feel, is superfluous, and the final word, "English", seems irrelevant.

Apart from that, it is a beautifully expressed tribute to an actor who can stand windblown at the front of the Titanic and make you believe dreams can come true, and who can stand naked in front of a camera and make you wish dreams would come true quickly, and who can do both with equal felicity.

Hi Kleo, stunning indeed. I haven't seen Holy Smoke, which I believe was an Australian film directed by Jane Campion. That's one for the Must See list.

Hi Janet, I've been trying to think of another actor with similar qualities but I can't.

Instead, I keep thinking of the fools who sniggered, some very publically, after the Titanic release that someone outside the anorexic Hollywod mould would dare to remove her clothes in a major film. Even worse, Winslet just keeps on doing it, without any apology or noticeable embarrassment.

Really, you'd think she thinks it natural, or something!

In other words, I don't think she gives a stuff about stereotypes, and I adore her for it.

i love Kate Winslet, as a person, and as an actor . . . she always says the most wonderful things about body image, and she puts everything into the characters she plays

*round of applause for Kate*

I love how Kate Winslet chooses the most interesting and challenging roles in Hollywood blockbuster and independent films.
I think an Academy Award is long overdue for Kate and she is my pick for the Best Actress Oscar this year.

Cheers!

Hi Linh,

I enjoyed your Oscars wish list. I suggest that, should Kate, or Cate, or Keira or Laura (I adore Laura Linney) win an Oscar, we all gather in the next comment box for a party. BYO champagne.

Kate Winslet is a very talented actor who probably deserved the Academy Award she won for her role in The Reader... I will hopefully see it this week.

P.S. I used to have a total crush on her in high school - I watched Titanic about 6 times, lol. But for some reason I feel like she's lost something (not just some of those curves). I am still a fan, though.

Lol, I used to have what I would lovingly refer to as 'the Kate Winslet shrine' which was really a small collage of about twelve photos. It was heavily stylised, showing her with different hairstyles (red-head, blonde), different attire (photo shoots, in roles) and shot in many different ways (one was even a fan-made charcoal drawing). My favourite pic of hers was with flaming red hair which was slightly windblown, looking off into the distance, with a red streetlight on in the background. She looked very sultry.

I really loved Kate's facial features (especially her eyebrows and lips), and the fact that she was relatively curvy - I felt like I could relate to her.

When I realised I was attracted to women at about 15, wanting to be between her and Leo in the Titanic love scenes suddenly made clicked into place.

She does do sultry well, doesn't she. Thanks for a great comment - I love all the positives in it.

Now would ya look at that!

The browser obviously couldn't cope with so much talent, but it's a great pic nevertheless.
