No solace for Ian Fleming

December 4th 2008 21:55
James Bond Q

The end of the world is nigh. What other conclusion can one come to given the shocking knowledge, which I have just discovered in a far flung corner of the world wide web, that the new James Bond film ignores - utterly ignores - gadgets.

It's enough to make Ian Fleming spin in his grave. What is James Bond without high-tech? What is the government doing about this?

The first thing they should do is introduce capital punishment for the crime of messing with tradition. 007 always has quirky gadgets. It should be mandatory for every Bond film to have an early scene where James visits the latest incarnation of Q, the gadget man, in the basement and gets given a toothbrush that doubles as a karaoke microphone or a handkerchief with embedded scrolling GPS maps or a pair of nasal hair scissors which expand into an Aston Martin.

Or something.

It is the second time in the new order of things Bond that Q has been omitted. They did it in the 2006 reincarnation of Casino Royale. That was based on the first James Bond book, released in 1953, and it is true that there was no Q in the book either. But that's no excuse. The 2006 film also excluded Miss Moneypenny who definitely was in the book.

Sacrilege.

It wouldn't have happened in the original Casino Royale. It wouldn't have happened when Ian Fleming was alive. Now Fleming is spinning in his grave. No gadgets? Spin. And what sort of a name for a Bond film is Quantum of Solace anyway? Spin, spin.

Sean Connery should be cryogenically frozen, then re-thawed each time another Bond film is to be made. Only he could make the name 'Pussy Galore' sound glamorous!

I love it.

Hear hear! I saw it last night & was most disappointed. I'd missed the last 5 or 6 Bond films & now see no reason not to do the same again.

I thought a female M was a great innovation. But dropping Q really gave me the P! There's only so much you can do with a tiny little pistol. And that's not much at all.

Some critic said this film was '....more Bourne than Bond'. I heartily agree with this assessment & will return to my thinning Thunderball videotape forthwith! P.

Hi Paul, good comments. I like the female M too, especially the way Judi Dench makes it look like the M stands for 'mean'. And I have to admit I like Daniel Craig in the role. But it's just not Bond without a bit of humour and a bit of quirk. Quite right, it's Bourne instead.

For me, it's back to my trusty copy of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. George was average but Dianna, ohhhh Dianna ...

I recently saw the film. I too was disappointed. I will support whoever plays Bond. I love Daniel Craig. I just think that he is being set up for failure. I need something to remind me I am watcing a 007 movie. Vodka martini, shaken not stirred. My name is Bond, James Bond. What happened to all of that. I heard that there was no place for that in the movie. There was no place for in any other movie, but we love it. Bottm line is that I will support the franchise, I just hope that the next one will be more like the other films

And what sort of a name for a Bond film is Quantum of Solace anyway? I was thinking the same thing. The Daniel Craig era is definitely taking the franchise in another direction!

Anonymous, good comment. Just one "My name is Bond, James Bond" would go a long way to linking the new to the old.

James, I keep thinking about Paul's "more Bourne than Bond". Sums it up, I think.

I am really out of touch it seems with today's James Bond(s). No gadgets? Think I will pass on this one. Shame.

Yes indeed, Janet, a gadgetless 007. Like a wingless 747, I reckon it won't fly. The silly thing is, while Daniel Craig is kissing the girls, he looks like he'd rather be killing baddies with his gadgets. Sean Connery, on the other hand, always looked more interested in the girls.
