Scarves, marriage and sex marathons
July 20th 2008 06:54
There is a lot to like about Douglas Brown. First of all, he knitted his wife a scarf for her 40th birthday. This was a big project because he first had to learn how to knit. He did this by attending knitting classes. All his classmates were women, and one can only wonder how many "Awwws" he got when he explained the purpose of his knitting tuition.
Having learned, Douglas got down to the knitty-gritty, and eventually presented his wife Annie with the finished scarf. She, reportedly, adored the surprise and didn't take it off for days.
Douglas and Annie are an early-40s couple who live in Colorado. They have been married for 13 years and they have two daughters. She works for a food company and he works for a newspaper. So the scarf gesture was as newsworthy as it was tender because it is not quite the typical news from a modern American family.
Bu the scarf, it turns out, was nothing compared to the sequel.
It was Annie's idea, and I wonder how many men would have found a way to say no. Douglas said yes to Annie's suggestion. "Yes, darling, certainly we can have sex for 101 days in a row."
Those 101 days started on January 1, 2006, and the story of them has just been released as a book. It is proving a popular book, with Douglas and Annie appearing on American television and generally making the news everywhere.
And that is entirely fair because it's a good story. It does tend to push the scarf incident out of mind, however, which is a pity.
