The Simpsons

A deal has just been signed between producers and Fox television for a 23rd season of The Simpsons.

That will take the show through the 500-episode mark, and firmly into the all-time third place for US television shows.

So which two shows are still ahead of it? Unless you are a Baby Boomer or a teeve geek, don't even try to guess.

The answer is Gunsmoke, with 635 episodes, and Lassie, with 588.

Gunsmoke ran on television for 20 seasons, from 1955 to 1975. They packed more into seasons back then. There was also a radio version of Gunsmoke, running 1952 to 1961.

Lassie's 588 episodes were packed into 17 seasons, from 1954 to 1973.

The executive producer of The Simpsons, Al Jean, is delighted with the show's elevation into the 500-episode club. "That we got to do 50 of these, much less 500, is a thrill,'' he said.

One wonders what the creators of Gunsmoke and Lassie would have made of Bart and his brood.
