Acceptance Speech

September 9th 2009 00:05
Speech Debelle

Speech Debelle, a singer of the hip hop genre, has just won the Mercury Music Prize for best British album of the year. She won with her debut album.

The album was called Speech Therapy and not, as one might have expected, Maiden Speech. We assume her second album will feature fewer tracks and be called Speech Less.

In Speech's acceptance speech, she said winning the Mercury Music Prize proved that "if you believe in something and you think you can do it, you can". She added, "I feel so good, it feels better than I imagined."

Speech's win follows the 2008 Mercury Prize victory by the band Elbow. Does one have to be named after a body part or function to be a successful musician these days?

Jacko nominated for Nobel Prize

August 11th 2009 05:22
michael jackson

A petition seeking to award the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to Michael Jackson — yes, that one — has been signed by more than 15,000 people.

The petition was started by an American college student. The text praises the singer for his commitment to humanitarian causes.

"We the undersigned, believe Michael Jackson has given of himself completely and selflessly in a lifelong effort to help better global conditions for children, and all of humankind," the petition said. "Michael Jackson has undoubtedly earned the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.''

The organisers say they are aiming for one million signatures.

If you think the goal of the petition misguided, the claims of the petition disputable and the organisers of the petition a beat short of three-four time, you would have a case. For starters, Nobel Peace Prize rules state that only parliamentarians, professors, previous laureates and members of certain international institutes are allowed to nominate candidates. Secondly, winners are not allowed to be dead.

Anyway, the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize already has 205 accepted nominees, including Barack Obama and Nicolas Sarkozy, both of whom take what might be termed a mainstream view of paedophilia and prescription drug abuse.

My suggestion is that everyone forget trying to earn a Nobel Prize for Michael Jackson and instead try to get one for Elvis Presley. He's still alive. I saw him in a McDonald's last week. Really, I did.

kyle sandilands

He's brash, he's a judge on Australian Idol and he got his first job in radio after lying on his résumé about working with Triple M. In September 2006, he was named by Zoo Weekly as Australia's most hated identity. He's Kyle Sandilands, Australia's answer to Gordon Ramsay.

He is in the news again after being accused of falsifying his Twitter follower numbers. How low can a man go?

The accusation has been made by Leon Hill, who runs a social media marketing company called uSocial. Hill was widely quoted by news sources when he called Sandilands and his 2Day FM radio show co-host Jackie O "Twitter wankers" after their Twitter following increased by 30,000 in 18 hours.

Hill's initial comments that the new followers were fake were made after he analysed some of the followers and found that most had no photos and few or no updates. The ones that were updating were doing so "with either their name, or an illegible grouping of letters".

Hill said most of the followers of the Twitter account were fake and that Sandilands and O were using a script or computer program to "create accounts and then follow their own".

"In my professional opinion, something funny was going on," Hill said. "I've seen this stuff before and to me it's quite obvious. Since all the publicity has come out about this Twitter issue with Kyle and Jackie's account, their followers have ceased to increase at such an alarming rate."

Sandilands has responded by threatening to sue Hill for slander.

According to Hill, "He stated that he'd taken on bigger people than me and won so he would have no problem taking me to court. He also said that I should think about moving my money overseas just in case I had a `retarded kid' over here to support as he intended to ruin me.

"He was quite calm, but very offensive as we've come to expect from him."

On their show on Monday morning, Sandilands and Jackie O said they believed the massive increase in followers was due to the fact that they were placed on a "recommended list".

Grimshaw and the pig

June 12th 2009 00:08
The celebrity spat of the year just got juicier with the news that Tracy Grimshaw has been asked to pose nude for an erotic magazine.

In case you are not up to speed with this story, which has chased swine flu off the front pages of the less credible newspapers around the country, here's a quick review: Gordon Ramsay, a grotesque parody of a celebrity chef, was interviewed by A Current Affair, a grotesque parody of a television current affairs show, hosted by Grimshaw
