Which type of lottery player are you?

October 1st 2009 00:10
lottery balls

There are only two types of lottery player: those who pick new numbers every week and those who always choose the same numbers. Some people like to chase luck while others like to stand still and hope luck catches them.

If you are the sort who likes to chase your luck, however, news from Bulgaria may cause you to rethink.

The numbers drawn in the Bulgarian national lottery of September 6 were 4, 15, 23, 24, 35 and 42. In the next drawing, four days later, the same six numbers came out. Bulgaria's Sports Minister has ordered an enquiry.

Mathematician Mihail Konstantinov worked out the odds of the same six numbers being chosen twice in a row: 4.2 million to one. But we want to know if Konstantinov's probability calculation factored in that there are only two types of lottery player ...

The lottery is like a box of chocolates. You pay through the teeth.

Hi Morgan,

Isn't a sure thing a lot less fun? That's why there are so many night clubs and so few brothels

I am a real small time gambler. I love lotteries and lotto - and just a correction on your post - a lottery (at least here) is where you buy a ticket and a winner (and winners) are drawn. Lotto is where you get to pick the numbers.

I usually use the same numbers but sometimes vary them in the hope that my numbers will come up one day.

By the way, did the same person win twice?

Hi Janet,

According to the report I saw, there were no winners the first week and 18 winners the second week. No wonder they launched an enquiry.

I thought it was really suspiciious that two lotto draws in Sydney got to $80 m in more or less the same week. It hadn't happened before. Interesting because I know the State government is trying to sell the lotteries.

Coincidence? Perhaps.

You're a cynic Janet! I like the way you think.
