Storm in a D-cup

aesthetic surgery

Nigel Mercer is ecstatic - cosmetic surgery procedures in Britain surged in 2008 despite the credit crunch!

Mercer is president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Not only that, he is prepared to admit it in public. He's even told his mum.

BAAPS released figures this week showing more than 34,000 procedures of the "aesthetic" kind were performed in 2008, up five per cent on the previous year.

But the big news, the news which has Mercer in plastic heaven, was that boob jobs jumped 30 per cent.

Women underwent 91 per cent of all procedures, but the number of men having breast tissue removed rocketed 44 per cent for the year.

“Despite the financial downturn, the public’s interest in aesthetic surgery remains strong,” Mercer told a British newspaper.

It was a tabloid paper, of course. Depending on gender, readers of tabloid newspapers either wish they too could have their breasts raised or their buttocks lowered or their lips inflated or their nostrils sculpted or their elbows sandpapered or their eyeballs tattooed, or they snigger at the pictures.

And there are all those stories about people taking a trip to Asia (mostly Thailand) to get these things done at a much cheaper rate.

And then there are the teeth. There are so many dentists around these days that offer a new smile, whiter teeth and a dazzling new look. You can just keep spending to get the look you want.

But we don't really have an ageist problem do we?

I know you were. But if women are uplifting their boobs and men are having the fat removed, that is only some of it.

Many women are going for botox and any surgery that removes the lines on their faces. If I could afford it I would do it because not only would I feel young, I would have better chances at everything. Look at Nicole Kidman's lips. That is just one example.

Hi Janet,

That's fair enough, of course, and the growth in the industry shows how many people agree with you.

But there is a line between reasonable use and escapist use. It seems to me that I am who I am, and I am as old as I am, and no amount of silicon or surgery is going to change that.

Hi James,

True. What's not so funny is that many women want bigger boobs because many men want them to have bigger boobs.

Hi Sam,

It's a good question. Let me know if you find an answer

eh!!!! OKAYY! MAY be it just easier although it could more painful but may be it worth not to show up and look as a someone who is full of insecurities

To me, cosmetic surgery is the pinnacle of human selfishness and foolishness.

Also, don't be fooled by common misconception - women are much more obsessed with their own breasts than men.

Sam, good answer, although I'd suggest there's a danger of over-generalising. Cosmetic surgery is so mainstream these days, many of these procedures are no more about insecurities than is, say, the application of make-up.

Jarrah, if my wife is more obsessed with her breasts than I am, she hides it well
