Big boys run in fear

It would be nice to be able to report that efforts of sports officials to eradicate cheating through drug use are having an effect.

Instead we can report a Keystone Cops scenario at the weekend when drug-testing officials paid a surprise visit to the Belgian bodybuilding championships.

When the first first official entered the change room, the competitors ran away. All 20 of them. "I have never seen anything like it," the official, Hans Cooman, said. "And I hope never to see anything like it again."

They didn't run so fast last year when testing at a regional bodybuilding event in northern Belgium saw three-quarters of the competitors test positive.

Cooman and his colleagues will now report the case to the disciplinary committee, which will have to decide whether the bodybuilders can be punished after refusing to be tested.
