Barbie shock and outrage

The American media is full of the latest moral outrage perpetrated by Mattel, maker of the Barbie doll.

Parents across the nation have been having their moment of fame, appearing on the news services expressing shock and horror that Mattel could do such a thing.

What Mattel has done is announce that one of the Barbie dolls to appear in the new spring range will have tattoos.

There are voices of reason amongst the shrieks of horror, but not many. Voices of reason don't make for compelling seven-second news bites. People should know by now that saying something sensible just ain't the way to get yourself on television.

The real story is that the new "Totally Stylin' Tattoos Barbie" comes with a set of body art stickers and a tattoo gun. The gun can be used to place the tattoos anywhere on Barbie, on Barbie's clothes, or on the kids themselves.

The tattoos, of butterflies and stuff, are temporary and wash off.

It's just so easy to see why people would be alarmed.

One reaction that hasn't been heard is that Mattel has a long history of keeping Barbie current. She moves with the times, and the accessories she comes with reflect those times. That could be why Barbie has been around for so long.

But that's hardly the stuff of television newsworthiness. Too sensible.

Oh, shock and horror! Barbie's really gone off the boil now.

And now I know why the Barbie post I did earlier this year has had so many hits lately....pity it didn't really develop into readers!

Hi Janet,

Barbie's really gone off the boil
Hey, she's just turned 50. We 50-somethings are allowed to go off the boil.

Hi Morgan,

Is a virgin mary figurine like a bloody mary figurine without the alcohol?
